Australian Mathematics Competition
In term 3 students from grades 7-10 take part in the Westpac Australian Mathematics Competition.
The Australian Mathematics competition was introduced in Australian Schools in 1978 as the first Competition in Mathematics. It has served almost all Australian secondary schools, providing valuable feedback and enrichment.
The competition has become the largest single event on the Australian Education Calendar, allowing students to attempt the same tasks, on the same day in about 40 countries. It has become a truly international event, with countries throughout the Pacific and South East Asia. We look forward to this exciting event each year!
Enrichment Program
Each year we offer a Mathematics Enrichment program at Marist North Shore. Students from years 7-10 are nominated by their mathematics teacher’s to take part in a Mathematics Enrichment Challenge, run by the Australian Mathematics Trust.
This challenge runs from June until September. The students will have to solve a series of complex mathematical problems. This challenge is not easy and the students involved should be commended on the time and effort they put into this program.
So far this program has been a success. It will run again next year so if parents are interested in their sons taking part they need to watch for notifications in the High Notes.
Mathematics Challenge
We also offer our gifted Mathematics students a Mathematics Challenge course which is similar to the above enrichment except that it runs for a shorter period of time. The Challenge runs for three week in term two. Again students and parents need to keep a close eye on the High Notes for notifications of these initiatives. Your mathematics teacher will also make you aware of these initiatives as they arise.
MOM – Minds on Math’s
Minds on Math’s Challenge’ is for students in the Archdiocese. The teachers of the students again nominate them for this challenge. The Challenge involves teams of six students from Stage 4 and Stage 5 from every participating school in the Archdiocese of Sydney.
These teams initially compete in a regional round involving problem solving and working mathematically. The winners from this round will progress to the Archdiocesan Grand Final Round. This is another exciting initiative that we look forward to each year!
