Science

Science in Stage 5 (Years 9 and 10) is slightly different from Stage 4 as there is one streamed science group as opposed to all mixed ability classes. Boys are selected at the end of Year 8 to be part of this class. Selection depends on a variety of areas including assessment marks, enthusiasm, teacher nomination and the demonstration of scientific thinking.

During Stage 5 this selected class will follow the basic course as outlined by the Board of Studies syllabus, as well as the opportunity to study some of the additional content.

The lesson delivery reflects a more independent learning style.

Gifted Science Students Workshops

A very exciting initiative that came into play this year was the CREST awards in Science and Technology offered by CSIRO.

Initiatives like this allow students to students to experience the exciting world of scientific research and technological development through a structured program that supports them in choosing, organising and undertaking their own open-ended experimental science or technology project.

Students undertake, in consultation with a supervising teacher, a creative and original project that involves experimentation (for science projects) or design, construction and appraisal (for technology projects).

Their project must have an application to the everyday world. The students may also enter these projects into the young scientist competition. .

This is an excellent Science enrichment and extension activity and we hope to offer it to our students again next year.

Nicola Freyne,

Gifted and Talented Coordinator.
