Service Opportunities
Year 9 Ministry of Service Program
The Year 9 ‘Ministry of Service’ program gives the boys the opportunity to visit ‘Georgian House’, an aged care home, assisting the elderly with diversional activities, while listening and speaking with the residents.
Georgian House is located in McLaren Street, North Sydney. Students visit the home on Tuesdays from 11.00 a.m. to 12.00 noon, to play bingo with residents. Boys take it in turns to call out numbers, while the others sit and assist residents. A roster is drawn up and boys are notified when their turn comes for Georgian House and are accompanied each week by Sr Maryanne. Staff and residents express their appreciation for the presence of the boys, and they look forward to having them come. It is a most positive experience both for the boys in relating with older people as well as for the elderly who have so much to give young people.
Year 11 Minsitry Week Program
The aim is to give students the opportunity to interact and work with people who have special needs in our community and to meet and work with those who serve them. Unlike “Work Experience Programs”, Ministry Week aims for students to give something of themselves – time, talents, to others rather than for any gains for themselves. It promotes the attitude that it is good to do something for others without expecting any returns. Inevitably, the experience has been that the “ministers” are more “ministered to” by those they meet and interact with.
Students are encouraged to interact with, listen to and learn from people with special needs – the young, the old, the sick and handicapped – those with physical or mental illnesses, the homeless, the lonely, the poor, the disadvantaged in our society and the dying
