Senior Studies: Year 11-12

SeniorSenior Study is comprised of the Preliminary H.S.C. Course and the H.S.C. Course. The Preliminary Course is conducted during Terms 1, 2 and 3 of Year 11, and is designed as an introductory program. HSC Course study begins in Term 4 of Year 11 and continues through to the HSC Exams in October and November of the Year 12 year. 

PRELIMINARY HSC COURSE

 For the Preliminary Course, boys at Marist must study a minimum of 13 Units. These must include:

1. A course in Religious Education: Catholic Studies (a Board endorsed 1 Unit Course based on the Archdiocesan RE Curriculum, Faithful to God, Faithful to People) OR a BOS course - either Studies of Religion 1 Unit or Studies of Religion 2 Unit.

2. A 2 unit English Course - either Standard or Advanced English.

3. Other units can be selected from a wide range of subjects:

2 Unit Subjects include

 General Mathematics, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Senior Science, Physics, Business Studies, Economics, Geography, Legal Studies, Ancient History, Modern History, Industrial Technology, Design and Technology, Information Processes and Technology, Software Design and Development, Visual Art, Music, Drama.

1 Unit Subjects include

 Extension Mathematics; Extension English; Photography, Video and Digital Imaging (a 1 Unit Content Endorsed Course); Sports, Lifestyle and Recreation (a 1 Unit Content Endorsed Course). 

Vocational Education

. As part of their senior studies boys may also choose to study vocational education courses - ones offered at school or TAFE Colleges. The College currently offers Retail Operations. This is designated a 'curriculum framework' course which means it has been developed by the NSW Board of Studies and is acceptable for study as part of the HSC and is also accredited by TAFE. It is the equivalent of a 2 Unit course. Courses accessed at TAFE include: Hospitality, Automotive Engineering, Graphic Design, and an number of other courses.

HSC COURSE

For the HSC boys may reduce their study load to a minimum of 11 units. They may choose to drop a 2 unit or 1 unit subject or replace one subject with an additional 1 or 2 Unit Extension course. To be eligible for a UAI students must carry through to the HSC exams 10 units of study in Board of Studies courses. Therefore for HSC study boys have a range of options:

For those boys pursuing HSC study and wishing to gain a UAI for possible University admission they must have:

1. A Religious Education Course - Catholic Studies or Studies of Religion - 1 or 2 Units. This is a College requirement.

2. A minimum of 2 Units of English, comprised of Standard or Advanced English, or Advanced English and 1 or 2 Units of Extension English.

3.Additional units to make the minimum of 10 units from the courses they studied for the Preliminary Course. They may choose one or other extension course: Mathematics 1 or 2 Unit Extension, 1 Unit History Extension. 

4. Boys may continue to choose to study a TAFE course in addition to their Board courses.

For those boys wishing to obtain their HSC but not wanting a UAI for University Admission, they may study:

1. A Religious Education Course - Catholic Studies or Studies of Religion - 1 or 2 Units. This is a College requirement.

2. A minimum of 2 Units of English, comprised of Standard or Advanced English, or Advanced English and 1 or 2 Units of Extension English.

3.A combination of any other courses available for study at the College: Board Courses, Curriculum Framework courses or TAFE courses.
